President William Ruto’s order to establish a taskforce to carry out a comprehensive forensic audit of the country’s public debt has suffered a blow after the high court suspended the order.
Justice Lawrence Mugambi of the Milimani Law courts issued the interim orders pending the hearing of the case following a petition lOdged by Nakuru Doctor Magare Gikenyi and activist Eliud Matindi who termed the creation of the taskforce as illegal and unconstitutional as it usurped the mandate of the independent office of the auditor General . He has further barred Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njunguna Ndungu, the Auditor General Nancy Gathungu, LSK President Faith Odhiambo and ICPAK chairperson Philip Kaikai from implementing the president’s directive to carry out the audit until the case is heard and determined.
This as separately, Jubilee party leaders have strongly opposed president William Rutos proposals that seek to curb government expenditures.
Led by Jeriamiah Kioni, the party says Kenya kwanza government has no constitutional grounds of closing the 47 state corporations, establishing a public debt task force and reconstitution of iebc in less than 10 days saying it is against the law.Kioni has meanwhile warned the public of a clause in the IEBC Amendment Bill 2024 which President William Ruto is set to sign into law.
The clause allows the electoral commission to designate various locations including mobile units like vehicles as polling stations.
The bill becomes the first to be successfully processed by Parliament based on the recommendations of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report.
