Chief Justice Martha Koome has launched the Prison Decongestion Rapid Result Initiative at the Nairobi Remand and Allocation Maximum Security Prison-Industrial Area.
The RRI is aimed at achieving a sustainable prison population and will be implemented in two phases, namely reviewing the bail and bond terms of the un-convicted persons currently in remand within Nairobi region and continuous review of sentences by Judges of the High Court until we achieve a sustainable prison population.
The Chief Justice emphasized the initiative’s role in reforming prisons to prioritize rehabilitation and reintegration for those who have strayed from the law.
She further also called upon the government to develop long-term mechanisms and protocols to ensure that the number of inmates does not spiral out of control, placing undue pressure on prison authorities.
The chief justice has urged the Judiciary to adopt Community Service Orders to ease prisons’ pressure.
